Library Services
The Library is open to members of the public, as well as to members of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society, for research during Library opening hours when Library staff will be available to assist. Members of the Society are allowed to borrow books (excluding those designated as for reference only.)
To ensure that items from the collection will be available it is advisable to contact us before visiting. Making an appointment will allow us to have material ready for you. Library staff will carry out thirty minutes of research free of charge if required, and this should be arranged in advance. Please note that any further research will be liable to a charge that must be paid before any more work is carried out.
We are able to photocopy, photograph and digitally scan documents that are held in the Library and Archive collection. Any copying will be carried out in accordance with Copyright law, and is subject to completion of a Copyright declaration form. Â Fragile items are unsuitable for copying but it may be possible to take a photo instead.
Charges for copying of documents that are held in the Library and Archive collection
Photocopying
(to be carried out by Library Staff)
Black and white : A4 40p. per page ; A3 80p. per page
Colour : A4 80p. per page ; A3 £1.60 per page
Oversize items (i.e. larger than A3) difficult to photocopy in sections (maps, wills, deeds, etc.)  :  £10.00 per hour pro rata
e.g. 5 min – £0.75
10  min – £1.50
15 min – £2.25
Scanning
A minimum fee for scans sent by email: £5.00 for up to 10 images, we will require the fee in advance with a signed copyright form.
In house scanning £0.80
Photography
Free to members £5.00 unlimited use - or 40p per single photograph
Research fee
Research carried out by Library Staff £10 per hour
After the first hour time is
charged in 1/2 hourly intervals at £ 5 per 1/2 hour
There is a minimum charge of £10 for research
The research fee covers the time spent on the search and not the results. We cannot guarantee that the information requested will be found.
Postage & Packing
UK: we use 2nd class unless otherwise specified and charge at cost plus packing
Overseas postage is estimated at cost plus packaging and posting
All charges must be pre-paid for postal/email/telephone research requests.
Please make any (sterling only) cheques payable to Whitby Literary & Philosophical Society.
Image Reproduction Charges
Persons or institutions wishing to reproduce images belonging to the Whitby Literary & Philosophical Society are invited to download our Application & Licence for Print Publication which contains all the necessary information.
